Introducing :: PopoBawa

After releasing their first six-track self-titled EP last year, and now working on the follow-up (set for this summer), the three-piece PopoBawa from Gosport in Hampshire have set about whetting the appetite with a demo upload entitled...'Appetite'.

PopoBawa are Ollie Hawkins (26) who writes all of the songs from his bedroom and plays guitar, sampler, oscillator; Sam McNeilly (25) on vocals, guitar, keyboard, percussion; and Steve Walker (27), drums and vocals.

As for the name, that came about after Ollie was watching a show on the Discovery Channel one day about a contemporary African mythical bat called Popobawa. Apparently some governments will use it as a scare tactic in rural villages to move possible voters away from voting stations. Although they make clear it bears no relation on their music, being stuck for a band name they found the word interesting - and PopoBawa they duly became.

So far they have only played live in the local area, but are planning to branch out once the next EP is recorded.  PopoBawa do, however, play Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth tomorrow (May 25).
